Evidenced Based is Best!

Image
Never Stop Critically Thinking I'm an RMT and have been for quite a few years now. I went to school and learned so very much about human anatomy, pathologies that can wreak havoc on our bodies, ways in which I could help, and so so much more. I am extremely happy I chose the career I did! The thing is, like with many educational programs it is outdated and based on historical beliefs and traditions.  Stepping out into the world, fresh-faced (sort of, I went back to school later in life ha!) I was ready to conquer, and elicit change in people that would make their lives all around better because I fixed their pain, dysfunction or issue. Honestly, it didn't take long for me to start questioning why it kept taking so long to see long-lasting effects. I was doing all the things I learned... And yes, I am a good therapist, I am a "deep tissue" therapist and my clients have always raved and referred others, and yes I have seen change and helped many, but it was frustrating ...

What if I told you the Jaw & Pelvic floor are connected?

Image
Wait what? How?! How does my TMJ relate to my pelvic floor?? How on earth can they be connected?! Well friends, they may be more connected than you think. Lets take a look!   Lets start with the physical aspects of the connection.    It starts before we are even born. As embryos early on we have what is called the gastrulation phase where our layers (endoderm, ectoderm and mesoderm) come together, line up and get ready to form our organs. So one end forms the mouth and the other forms the urethra, anus and reproductive organs.    Then we can take a look at fascial lines, so our tissue that connects us and essentially holds us together. Due to this connection when we have tension in one spot we can have tension in another if we follow the line that fascia goes. Great new though!!! If tension can follow this line so can relaxation. The Jaw sits above in a straight line up from our pelvic floor… think about it Now how about the mirror connection. Have you e...

So you've gotten hurt! What now?!  You may be immediately thinking R.I.C.E. Rest Ice Compression Elevation  What if I told you that R.I.C.E is sooooo yesterday?  I'm more of a potato girl anyways! Don't worry! Have no fear! There is a new acronym in town, and it's even better! Today we shall talk... M.E.A.T. Movement Exercise Analgesic Treatment Ok so let's take a "bite" and get into it. Movement - This is HUGE. Movement is going to keep your body bringing all those yummy nutrients to the injured area. On top of that it is going to help stop you from stiffening up and losing significant range of motion. Yes please! Don't go crazy here just take it slow move within the tolerance of pain. Exercise - Yes I know it is a bit tender. So what this will mean is to take it down a notch! So don't go full weight bearing right away that's just crazy talk, BUT the quicker you can start to reload the muscle/ligament, whichever it may be, the quicker you wi...

Tips to make the most of your massage

Image
We all want to get the most out of our massage sessions so it may be important to note some tips that can help achieve just that! 1. Schedule your appointment strategically When you schedule your appointment try and ensure you are not going to be rushing to get to your treatment. With that also try end ensure that you won't be rushing out after your massage to another appointment. NO one wants to be extra stressed and rushed before their massage but most definitely no one wants to immediately reverse the effects a massage has by rushing out afterwards. Also consider how you feel after a massage. Do you feel sleepy? Invigorated? Depending on how you typically feel afterwards will dictate if you should start or finish our day with a massage or if maybe weekends are your best option. 2. Don't eat or drink too much prior Massage stimulates our digestive system, if you have eaten a larger meal you may feel bloated and uncomfortable causing you to be unable to fully relax and enjoy y...

Facial Cupping? You can do cupping on my face?!

Image
What is Facial Cupping? Cupping is an ancient practice with roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is used today in many practices across the health and wellness sector. First off unlike traditional cupping performed on the body, facial cupping does not leave marks on the skin and is a relaxing practice.  During Facial cupping, the skin is gently suctioned away from the rest of the face, neck, and décolleté using special tools to stimulate the flow of nutrient and oxygen rich blood to the skin and muscles and to stimulate Qi - which is life force energy. By using suction or negative pressure we can: Alleviate headaches and symptoms caused by TMJD in the face and head Lift and tone the face by relieving muscle tension Release fascial restrictions that cause the fascia to "stick" to the underlying structures Detoxify the skin by stimulating and encouraging lymphatic drainage Achieve a natural brow lift Improve the appearance of fine lines and deeper wrinkles How does t...

Swelling & Inflammation

Image
What is swelling & inflammation? When our body is injured, no matter what the injury is, where it is in the body or whether it is bone, muscle, tendon etc. the body will go into sequences/phases for recovery.  1. Inflammation 2. Repair 3. Remodeling  Each of these phases must be completed for the next to begin. Inflammation is non-negotiable and healing cannot happen without it. Swelling is the bodies way of protecting the injured area with inflammation, think of it as creating space for the healing fluids.  The problem is we loooooooove to stop inflammation and swelling before it has a chance to do what it needs to do... NSAIDS, Ice, Rest etc. we have an extreme aversion to anything pain related and want it to stop as soon as it starts.  To be completely honest this is a recipe for disaster! By doing this we are opening ourselves up to potentially developing chronic pain or further injury to the area.  Look, pain is necessary, it tells us when something i...

Neurofascial what?!

Image
Rapid Neurofascial Reset AKA Rapid-NFR!  This treatment is an absolute game changer, as far as massage treatments go, for removal of pain, regaining range of motion and just getting back to doing everything you love to do as quickly as you possibly can. This is the reason I love doing this treatment, I will always talk about it and always offer it! So what is it... RAPID is a type of massage that treats aches and pains by focusing on the nerves rather than muscle tissue.  It’s a lotion-free technique, so you remain clothed, and the treatment is movement-based to encourage performance of active motion. Everyone sits on a different pain spectrum, whether it’s having a hangnail vs a broken bone vs fibromyalgia. When you feel pain, whether it’s something slight or sharp, a recent and acute injury, or something that’s long-term and chronic, that pain sensation is coming from nerves that are excessively sensitive .  What is normally expected is that when the brain processes th...
